Shuttlecocks Used in Professional Badminton Tournaments

The most commonly used feather shuttlecocks in professional tournaments are made by a few major brands, including Yonex, Victor, and RSL. These shuttlecocks are manufactured to specific standards, with consistent weight, speed, and flight characteristics.

The Yonex Aerosena shuttlecock has recently become increasingly popular in professional tournaments. This shuttlecock features a unique, cone-shaped skirt design that reduces air resistance and creates a more efficient flight path. It is used in major international badminton tournaments, including the Olympic Games and World Championships.

Notably, shuttlecocks used in professional tournaments are higher quality than those used in casual or recreational play. They are carefully inspected and tested to ensure they meet the required standards for use in competition.

Is Plastic Shuttlecock Used in International Badminton Matches?

The BWF has approved synthetic shuttlecocks for international tournaments, but plastic shuttlecocks are not used in international matches. Feather shuttlecocks, made from natural feathers and cork, are the standard shuttlecocks used in professional tournaments.

While plastic shuttlecocks may be suitable for recreational or casual play, they are not considered to be of sufficient quality for use in professional competitions. Plastic shuttlecocks are typically less durable and offer less consistent flight characteristics than feather shuttlecocks, affecting the quality of play and the game’s fairness.

Furthermore, the rules and regulations of international badminton tournaments require the use of shuttlecocks that meet specific standards for weight, size, and flight characteristics, which can only be achieved with feather shuttlecocks.

So, plastic shuttlecocks are not used in professional matches, including international tournaments, but they may be suitable for beginners or casual play.

BWF Approved the use of Synthetic Feather Shuttlecocks at International Tournaments

In one of his interviews, Lloyd Green, the Communications and Media Manager of BWF stated: “The BWF has made it possible for shuttlecock manufacturers to seek approval under the BWF Equipment Approval scheme for versions of their synthetic feather shuttlecocks to be used in international competitions.”

Badminton World Federation

Feedback indicated that the Yonex synthetic feather shuttle was more durable and economical compared to a traditional natural feathered shuttle while at the same time providing a very similar flight and performance, Lloyd said.

During the various tests, it was discovered that the synthetic feather shuttle could reduce shuttlecock usage by up to 25 percent, providing a significant environmental and economic edge for badminton in the future, it is informed.

It has represented a significant development in the sport of badminton. Synthetic shuttlecocks could offer several advantages over traditional feather shuttlecocks, including increased durability and consistency in flight characteristics.

Rather than this, using synthetic shuttlecocks could also have environmental benefits, as it may reduce the demand for natural feathers and could lead to a more sustainable badminton industry.
